Abstract

Realistic mathematics education (RME) is learning mathematics that suits mathematics with the reality and human activities. In Realistic mathematics education, it is formulated both concept of horizontal and vertical mathematics. Its principals are guided reinvention and progressive mathematizing, didactical phenomenology, self developed models. Moreover, its characteristics are the use of context, the use of model bridging by vertical instruments, student contribution, interactivity, and intertwining. In addition, RME involves some steps of learning such as understanding contextual problems, solving contextual problems, comparing and discussing the answer, and concluding. By using RME, it is expected that the students are able to construct and find by themselves the knowledge of mathematics concepts whether they are guided by the teachers, and as the result the quality of learning mathematics is much better or improved.
